[Cinema Y] ‘Dr. Chun’ ranks first in box office hits during the Chuseok holiday… Sense of crisis in theaters ↑ “Golden holiday is colorless"

The winner of this year's Chuseok holiday theaters, which lasted for 6 days, was the movie 'Dr. Cheon's Exorcism Lab: The Secret of the Snow Scene' (hereinafter 'Dr. Cheon').

According to the Korea Film Council's integrated computer network for movie theater admissions on the 4th, 'Dr. Chun' ranked first in the box office during the holiday season, attracting 1,512,454 people nationwide from September 27 to October 3. The competing film '1947 Boston', which was released on the same day, only attracted 735,556 people, and 'The Spider's Nest' only attracted 265,648 people. '30 Days', which was released on the last day of the holiday, caused a stir by attracting more than 170,000 viewers in one day.

Although 'Dr. Chun' ranked first at the box office throughout the holiday, it lacked firepower compared to 'Confidential Assignment 2: International', which was the winner during last year's Chuseok holiday. 'Confidential Control 2' drove the Chuseok theater box office by attracting 2.81 million people (final audience of 6.98 million) during last year's Chuseok holiday, which lasted for four days.

This year, three Korean films clashed on the same day, but the total number of viewers they attracted was only 2.01 million. As new works failed to appeal to audiences, the total number of visitors to theaters during the holiday period (as of the 5th) remained at 3.09 million (3.71 million as of the 4th of 2022).

Due to the increase in theater admission fees, the replacement of OTT, and above all, the competitiveness of Korean films has decreased, they have not been able to attract audiences to theaters. Korean movies dominated the Chuseok theater screens as before COVID-19, but customer evaluations of the taste were stingy compared to the number of side dishes.

The only silver lining is that there will be one more Hangul Day holiday. Four Korean films, as well as the Hollywood blockbuster 'The Creator', will face off once again. In particular, four Korean films are expected to struggle to break even and form a new competitive landscape.
