‘Cobweb’ opens as scheduled… Agreement reached with late director Kim Ki-young's bereaved family, "contents are confidential"

The movie 'The Spider's Nest', which was embroiled in a lawsuit ahead of its release, can now meet audiences as planned.

On the morning of the 18th, Seoul Central District Court's Civil Settlement Division 60 (Presiding Judge Lim Hae-ji) held a mediation session for the injunction lawsuit filed by three bereaved family members, including director Kim Ki-young's second son Kim Dong-yang, against Anthology Studio, the production company of 'Cobweb'.

The two sides reached an agreement that day. Director Kim Ki-young's side and the representative of 'Spider's Nest' said, "Mediation has been established." However, he said, "It is difficult to talk about the details of the agreement because there is a confidentiality agreement."

Previously, the bereaved family of the late director Kim Ki-young filed a suit for an injunction to block the screening, claiming that the character of director Kim Yeol, played by Song Kang-ho, in 'The Spider's Nest' was based on the deceased and portrayed it negatively, infringing on the deceased's personality and portrait rights.

Director Kim Ji-woon claimed in a previous interview that the late director Kim Ki-young served as inspiration for the character of director Kim Yeol in "Cobweb," and the "character in According to the side of the grieving family, the work "reminds one of the departed in the appearance of him wearing glasses and smoking a pipe in his mouth.  In response to the film's portrayal of filmmaker Kim Yeol negatively, he also yelled out, "It is a clear violation of personal rights."

It is neither a biography nor based on director Kim Ki-young, the production firm retorted. Since the movie is set in Chungmuro in the 1970s, it just gave off that feeling." He also explained, “The appearance of horn-rimmed glasses and pipe smoking was a common description of a film director at the time.”

Director Kim, who believes that if only the ending of 'Cobweb' was re-filmed, it would become a masterpiece, depicts what happens as he pushes through filming under extremely harsh conditions, including actors and producers who do not understand the changes.

As the two sides reached a dramatic agreement, 'Cobweb' will be able to meet audiences normally on the 27th.
